Museum of Digital Cultures
The Museum of Digital Cultures is a creative hub in Hamburg that bridges physical and digital worlds through immersive exhibitions and active visitor participation.
The Museum of Digital Cultures is the architectural interface between the physical and virtual world. Located in Hamburg's Oberhafen district, the design forms a museum-like center that unites the two areas on either side of the harbor basin into a large creative quarter. The context is shaped by the old freight warehouse halls of the former railway facilities. A modernization initiative by the City of Hamburg aims to transform these halls into creative and cultural institutions in the future. The design adopts this distinctive warehouse hall typology and thereby creates a connection to the opposite side of the harbor basin. In this way, the museum also takes on the function of a connecting bridge and serves as the communicative centerpiece of the area. The theme of the museum exhibition is the phenomena and products of the digital world. The everyday use of new media and the associated multidimensional experience in society increases the need for experience-oriented communication in a museum setting. Since the Museum of Digital Cultures is not merely a place to exhibit objects, it is also a place of production. Visitors gain insights into and interact with the production process, from the idea to the finished exhibit. The visitor is no longer just a passive recipient but becomes an active part of the museum experience.
